Here are links to some of the software that we are using in class and as part of the Open Source, Collaborative Classrooms Pilot Project.  All of this software will be available for Windows or Linux.

Operating System

Ubuntu – You can also download the Ubuntu Netbook Remix that is installed on the netbook computers we will be using in class.  It does not need to be installed on a netbook, and will work just as well on a desktop or laptop.  If you have an old computer around the house and you want to try this system out – go for it!

Web Browser

Firefox – An open source alternative to MS Internet Explorer

Office Suite

OpenOffice.org – A full featured Office Suite that allows users to create and edit text documents, spreadsheets, presentations and more.  Compatible with MS Office up to XP/2003.

Graphics

GIMP – the GNU Image Manipulation Program.  A powerful open source open source alternative to Graphics programs such as Adobe Photoshop.

TuxPaint – Fun drawing program for children.

Sound and Video

Audacity – A program to record, mix, and manipulate sound.

VLC Media Player – A program to play media files in a variety of formats.

Other

Google Earth – A 3D globe, built from satellite photos of the earth that lets you zoom in anywhere in the world.
